The short answer
Wix and WordPress are the two names most small business owners hear first. Both can give you a professional website. The right choice depends on how much you want to manage yourself, and how big you expect the site to grow.
- Choose Wix if you want to build and edit the site yourself, with hosting, security and updates handled for you, and your needs are a few pages, simple bookings or a small shop.
- Choose WordPress if you want full ownership, unlimited flexibility, a large multilingual site, control over where your data is hosted, or the option to move freely between hosts and agencies.
Below is the detail, with 2026 prices in USD (and EUR where the vendor prices in euros). Prices exclude VAT and sales tax, which depend on your country.

Pricing in 2026
Wix plans
Wix shows prices by region and currency, so the figures on your screen may differ. Based on US pricing reported in September and October 2026:
- Free: Wix branding and a Wix web address. Fine for testing, not for a real business.
- Light: USD 17 a month billed yearly, or USD 24 month to month. A basic site, but it cannot take payments.
- Core: USD 29 a month billed yearly. The minimum plan to sell online and accept bookings.
- Business: USD 39 a month billed yearly. More storage and more e-commerce features, such as multiple currencies.
- Business Elite: USD 159 a month billed yearly, for larger stores.
Hosting, security and a free domain for the first year (on yearly plans) are included. Payment processing fees and paid apps from the Wix App Market come on top.
WordPress costs
WordPress itself is free. The real costs are:
- Hosting: budget hosting from about USD 3 a month on introductory deals, usually renewing higher. Managed WordPress hosting from known providers typically starts around USD 15 to 35 a month.
- Domain name: a yearly fee.
- Theme and plugins: many are free, but premium versions often charge a yearly licence.
- Maintenance: updates, backups and security checks, done by you or paid for.
So a lean WordPress site can cost less per month than Wix. A WordPress site with premium plugins and a maintenance contract can cost more. Our guide to website cost breaks down the full picture.
Ease of use
Wix wins on day one. You pick a template, drag elements around, and publish. There is no hosting to set up and no plugins to update. In 2026 Wix also launched Wix Harmony, an AI site builder that can make changes to your site from plain-language requests, alongside the usual visual editor.
WordPress takes longer to learn. Someone has to install it, choose a theme, add plugins and keep them updated. Once a developer sets it up properly, though, editing pages and blog posts is straightforward, and you will find tutorials and help in almost any language.
The honest summary: Wix is easier to start, WordPress is easier to grow without hitting limits.
Is Wix good for SEO?
This is one of the most searched questions about Wix, and the answer in 2026 is yes, for most small businesses. Older complaints about Wix SEO date from years ago. Today Wix gives you editable page titles and meta descriptions, clean URLs, automatic sitemaps, 301 redirects, structured data options and a built-in SEO setup checklist.
Where WordPress still has the edge:
- Depth of control: with an SEO plugin, you can fine-tune almost everything, which matters for large sites with hundreds of pages.
- Content-heavy sites: big blogs, directories and resource libraries are easier to structure and scale on WordPress.
- Technical freedom: you can change server settings, caching and code when you need to.
For a local service business, the platform is rarely what holds rankings back. Good content, a complete Google Business Profile and solid local SEO matter far more.
Speed
Speed affects both your Google ranking and whether mobile visitors stay. Here Wix has improved a lot. In the October 2026 edition of the State of Web Vitals report from corewebvitals.io, based on real mobile data, about 94% of Wix sites in the sample had a good Largest Contentful Paint score, compared with about 70% of WordPress sites.
That does not mean every Wix site is fast or every WordPress site is slow. WordPress speed depends on your hosting, theme and plugins. A carefully built WordPress site on good hosting can be very fast. A cheap host with a heavy theme and twenty plugins will not be. With Wix, Wix controls the infrastructure, so results are more consistent but you have less room to optimise further.
Multiple languages and right-to-left scripts
If you serve customers in more than one language, test this carefully before you commit.
Wix
Wix Multilingual lets you add languages and manage translations from the editor. For right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew, translated text can be set to right to left, but according to Wix's help centre some layout work is manual: you may need to flip images, reorder galleries and adjust menus for each language, and some apps, such as Stores, use one text direction for all languages.
WordPress
WordPress has supported RTL in its core for many years, and most quality themes mirror the layout automatically. For a multilingual site, you add a plugin. Polylang has a free version, and WPML costs from EUR 39 to EUR 199 a year depending on the plan, according to a September 2026 price check. For a large multilingual site, WordPress is usually the smoother option.
Bookings and online stores
Many small businesses need appointments, classes or a small shop. Both platforms can do it.
Wix
From the Core plan, Wix includes Wix Bookings, Wix Events and Wix Stores, all managed from one dashboard. This is convenient for salons, clinics, studios, coaches and small shops. Wix Payments, Wix's own processor, is only offered in some countries, so check Wix's list of payment providers for your country before you plan your checkout.
WordPress
WooCommerce is free and powers stores of every size. Booking plugins cover appointments, rentals and classes. You get more choice of regional payment gateways and more control over checkout. The trade-off is more setup and more maintenance, especially for security once you take payments.
If you mainly sell products online, also look at Shopify. Our best website platform guide compares it with Wix and WordPress.
Data protection and GDPR
If you have visitors or customers in the EU or UK, the GDPR applies to the personal data your site collects, such as contact forms, bookings, orders and analytics.
- Wix publishes GDPR guidance in its help centre and offers a data processing agreement for Wix users. You still need to set up cookie consent, a privacy policy and sensible form settings yourself.
- WordPress runs wherever you host it, so you can choose a host with EU data centres and control which plugins send data to third parties.
On both, collect only the data you need and keep a simple list of the tools that receive visitor data.
Moving away later
This is the biggest long-term difference, and it is easy to overlook when you start.
Wix does not offer a full site export. You can export contacts, products and orders as CSV files and download your media, but pages and design cannot be exported. A guide from Hostinger published in October 2026 also notes that the Wix blog RSS feed only includes your 20 most recent posts as short excerpts, so full articles usually have to be moved by hand or with a third-party tool. Moving off Wix means rebuilding the site and setting up redirects to protect your rankings.
WordPress is open source. You can take your files and database to any host or developer at any time. If your relationship with an agency ends, your website does not have to.
Which one should you choose?
Wix is a good fit if:
- You want to build and update the site yourself without technical help.
- You need a simple site with a few pages, a booking calendar or a small shop.
- You prefer one monthly bill with hosting and security included.
- Your site will stay small to medium in size.
WordPress is a good fit if:
- You want full ownership and the freedom to move.
- You need a large site, a busy blog or several language versions.
- You need specific integrations, for example with a CRM or booking system.
- You have someone, inside or outside the business, to handle updates.
What about something simpler?
If your site is mainly a few pages plus a contact form or chat button, a single focused landing page or a fast static site may be enough, with lower running costs than either. See landing page vs website for help deciding.
Checklist: questions to ask before choosing
- Will I edit the site myself, or will someone do it for me?
- Which languages do I need, and how many pages will be translated?
- Do I need online payments or bookings, and which payment provider works in my country?
- How big could this site be in two years?
- If I want to change platform later, how much rebuilding am I willing to do?
If you are in the UAE
At 1 USD = 3.6725 AED, Wix Light is about AED 62 a month billed yearly, Core about AED 107, Business about AED 143 and Business Elite about AED 584, and Wix may show slightly different local prices. Budget WordPress hosting starts around AED 11 a month on introductory deals, and managed WordPress hosting around AED 55 to 129. UAE VAT of 5% applies on top where relevant. According to Wix's help centre, Wix Payments is not offered in the UAE, and the payment providers listed for UAE sites are PayPal and Stripe. For a bilingual Arabic and English site, WordPress handles right-to-left layouts more smoothly, while Wix may need manual layout work per language. The UAE Personal Data Protection Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021) applies to customer data, with separate rules in free zones such as DIFC and ADGM. Frequently asked questions
Is Wix good for SEO in 2026?
Yes, for most small businesses. Wix now includes editable titles and meta descriptions, sitemaps, redirects and structured data, while WordPress still offers more depth for large, content-heavy sites.
Is Wix cheaper than WordPress?
Not always. Wix starts at USD 17 a month billed yearly, and you need at least USD 29 a month to take payments. A simple WordPress site on budget hosting can cost less, but premium plugins and maintenance add up.
Is Wix GDPR compliant?
Wix provides GDPR guidance and a data processing agreement for its users. You are still responsible for your cookie consent, privacy policy and how you collect and use visitor data.
Can I move my Wix site to WordPress later?
You can move content, but not the design. Wix has no full site export, so you rebuild the pages on WordPress, import contacts and products from CSV files, and set up redirects to keep your rankings.
Which is better for a multilingual website, Wix or WordPress?
Both support multiple languages. WordPress handles right-to-left layouts in its core and with most themes, while Wix may need some manual layout adjustments per language, so WordPress is usually easier for large multilingual sites.
Is Wix good for a small business?
Yes, if you want to manage a simple site yourself with hosting included. If you expect to grow into a large multilingual site or want full ownership, WordPress is the safer long-term choice.
