The short answer

There is no single best website platform for every business. There is a best platform for your business, your budget and how much you want to manage yourself.

  • Selling products online? Shopify is the safest starting point.
  • Want to edit everything yourself on a small budget? Wix or Squarespace.
  • Need a flexible site with lots of content, plugins and integrations? WordPress.
  • Want a design-led marketing site your team can update visually? Webflow or Framer.
  • Care most about speed, security and low running costs? An Astro website, built by a developer.
  • Running a large, complex or government-style portal? Drupal, or in some cases Joomla.

Below, we explain why, with 2026 list prices in US dollars (local currency prices vary by country and tax).

What matters when you choose a platform

  • Speed on mobile. Most visitors arrive on a phone, often from social media or paid ads. A slow site wastes ad spend.
  • SEO and languages. Clean URLs, editable meta tags, hreflang tags if you publish in several languages, and right-to-left (RTL) support if you need scripts such as Arabic or Hebrew.
  • Security and privacy. Who updates the site, and where form data is stored, for example to meet the GDPR in the EU and UK.
  • Total cost of ownership. Plan fees, apps, plugins, translations, hosting and developer time over three years.
  • Who will edit it. A site your team cannot update becomes outdated quickly.

Market share in 2026: who is actually using what

According to W3Techs data at the end of October 2026, WordPress powers about 39.5% of all websites and holds roughly 58% of the CMS market. Shopify follows with about 5.3% of all sites, then Wix at 4.2% and Squarespace at 2.4%. Joomla sits around 1.1%, Webflow 0.8%, Drupal 0.7% and Framer 0.2%.

Popularity means more developers and integrations wherever you are. It does not automatically make a platform the right fit.

WordPress: the flexible all-rounder

WordPress is free, open source software you install on your own hosting, with thousands of themes and plugins for bookings, forms, memberships, languages and e-commerce through WooCommerce.

WordPress 7.0 was released in May 2026, followed by 7.1 in August. Version 7.0 added a built-in AI client and a Connectors screen so site owners can link external AI models, with nothing sent anywhere until you switch a connection on.

Languages: WordPress has mature RTL support in its core, and multilingual plugins handle sites in several languages well.

The trade-off: you are responsible for hosting, updates, backups and security. Most problems we see come from outdated plugins or cheap hosting, so budget for maintenance.

Best for: content-heavy sites, blogs, businesses that need many integrations, and teams that want full ownership of their site and data. You can also choose where your hosting is located, which helps if you need to keep data in a specific region.

WordPress vs Wix: control or convenience

Wix is an all-in-one website builder: hosting, security and updates are included. Annual plans start at about $17 per month for Light, $29 for Core and $39 for Business, with Business Elite at $159.

In January 2026, Wix launched Wix Harmony, an editor where an AI agent called Aria generates pages from a prompt.

Wix supports multilingual sites, including RTL layouts, and suits owners who want to launch quickly and edit the site themselves. The main question is ownership: with Wix you rent the platform and cannot move your site to another host; with WordPress you own everything, but you also maintain everything. Our Wix vs WordPress guide goes deeper.

WordPress vs Webflow: design control without plugins

Webflow is a visual builder with close design control and a built-in CMS. Hosting and security are managed for you.

Webflow changed its site plans in May 2026. The Basic plan is now about $15 per month billed yearly, and a new Premium plan at about $25 per month billed yearly replaced the older CMS and Business plans. Each extra language through Webflow Localization costs about $9 per month.

Webflow usually wins on clean design and less maintenance, WordPress on plugins, e-commerce depth and freedom to move hosts. RTL pages in Webflow need deliberate design work. See our Webflow vs WordPress guide for detail.

Best for: marketing sites for agencies, consultancies, startups and product launch pages where design quality matters.

Shopify: the default for e-commerce

If selling online is the core of your business, Shopify is hard to beat: checkout, inventory, payments and shipping work out of the box.

Current plans are Basic at $29 per month billed yearly, Grow at $79 and Advanced at $299. Monthly billing costs more, and local pricing can differ by country. If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, so check whether Shopify Payments is available in your country before you choose.

Best for: fashion, beauty, food and any brand whose main goal is selling products online.

Astro: fast static sites for speed and low maintenance

Astro is an open source framework. Instead of building each page on a server at every visit, an Astro site is pre-built into lightweight files served from a global network, so it loads very fast and has far less to attack or update.

In January 2026, Cloudflare announced it was acquiring the company behind Astro. Astro remains open source and can still be hosted on Cloudflare or elsewhere. Brands such as Unilever, Visa and NBC News use it.

Languages: because the code is custom, a developer can build each language version with correct layout and hreflang tags from day one, including RTL scripts.

The trade-off: Astro is not a drag-and-drop builder. A developer builds it, and you edit content through a connected CMS.

Best for: service businesses, landing pages, clinics and consultants who want a fast, secure site with very low monthly running costs. Our WordPress vs Astro guide compares the two in detail.

To be transparent: this is what we build most often at dhowly, usually hosted on Cloudflare, alongside WordPress when a project needs it. You can see how we approach it on our web design service page.

Joomla vs Drupal: the enterprise-style open source options

Joomla and Drupal are both free, open source content management systems, older and smaller than WordPress but still actively developed.

Joomla released version 6.0 in October 2025, with automatic core updates and good built-in multilingual and RTL features, though its developer pool is smaller than WordPress's.

Drupal is known for security, complex permissions and very large sites. Drupal CMS 2.0, released in January 2026 on Drupal 11, adds a visual page builder called Drupal Canvas, AI tools and site templates.

Drupal usually suits large organisations, universities and public sector portals; Joomla can suit mid-sized multilingual organisations. For a typical small business, both are more than you need. More in our WordPress vs Joomla vs Drupal guide.

Framer and Squarespace: worth a quick look

Framer (from about $10 per site per month, billed yearly) shines for animated startup landing pages. Squarespace raised prices in 2026 and now starts at about $19 per month for Basic; it is polished and simple, but test RTL support first if you need it.

Privacy and data protection: a quick check

Every site collects personal data through forms, bookings and analytics. If you have visitors in the EU or UK, the GDPR applies, and many other countries have similar laws.

  • Hosted builders (Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Shopify) store data on their infrastructure: check their data processing agreement.
  • Self-hosted options (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Astro) let you choose the host and region.
  • Cookie consent: analytics and ad pixels need a banner that blocks tracking until people agree.

Which one should you choose? By business type

Restaurant or cafe

Wix or Squarespace if you want to edit it yourself; a small Astro site for maximum speed and almost no maintenance. For direct delivery, use Shopify or a dedicated ordering system.

Clinic or healthcare practice

WordPress handles booking plugins and doctor profiles well; an Astro site connected to a booking tool gives speed and security with fewer moving parts. Keep patient data inside a proper practice system, not website forms.

Real estate agency

Agencies need a credible main site plus fast landing pages for campaigns. WordPress works well for large property listings with search filters. For campaign pages that must load instantly from Meta or Google ads, a static Astro build or a focused page from our landing page service usually converts better.

E-commerce brand

Start with Shopify unless you have a strong reason not to. WooCommerce on WordPress is the main alternative if you want full ownership or have very specific product logic. Wix can work for a small catalogue.

Consultant or professional services

Webflow, Framer or an Astro site are all good fits. WordPress works too if blogging is central to your SEO plan.

Cost of ownership: think in three years, not one month

A cheap monthly plan can become expensive once you add apps, languages and paid help, while a custom static build costs more upfront but very little to run. Compare quotes on the total over three years. Our guide to how much a website costs breaks this down with real price ranges.

If you are in the UAE

  • Arabic and English. Many UAE businesses need a bilingual site with proper Arabic RTL layout, not just translated text. WordPress, Joomla and Drupal handle this best out of the box.
  • Prices in AED (at 1 USD = 3.6725 AED): Wix Light about AED 62 a month, Webflow Basic about AED 55, Shopify Basic about AED 107, Framer about AED 37 and Squarespace Basic about AED 70, all billed yearly.
  • VAT. UAE VAT is 5% and may be added to platform fees and agency invoices.
  • Payments. Check which payment gateways work in the UAE with your chosen platform before you commit, especially for Shopify.
  • Data protection. The UAE Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) covers personal data collected through your forms. Businesses in DIFC or ADGM follow those free zones' own data protection rules.

Our honest recommendation

Pick the simplest platform that does what your business needs today and will not block you in two years.

WordPress remains a sensible, flexible default. Shopify is the clear choice for online stores. If speed, security and low running costs come first, a static Astro build is worth serious consideration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best website platform for a small business?

For most small businesses, WordPress, Wix or a fast static Astro site are all solid choices. Wix suits owners who want to edit everything themselves, WordPress suits sites with lots of content and integrations, and Astro suits businesses that want top speed with very low maintenance.

Which website platforms support multiple languages and right-to-left scripts?

WordPress, Joomla and Drupal have strong built-in multilingual and RTL support, and Wix, Shopify and Webflow also support RTL languages such as Arabic. Custom builds such as Astro give full control over every language version. Always test RTL pages on mobile before launch.

Is Shopify better than WordPress for e-commerce?

For most online stores, Shopify is easier to run because hosting, checkout and security are managed for you. WordPress with WooCommerce gives more ownership and flexibility but needs more maintenance.

What is an Astro website?

Astro is an open source framework that builds very fast, mostly static websites. It is now backed by Cloudflare and suits content and marketing sites that need speed, security and low hosting costs.

Which platform is best for GDPR compliance?

No platform is compliant on its own. Self-hosted options such as WordPress or Astro let you choose where data is stored, while hosted builders offer data processing agreements. In every case you still need a privacy policy, proper cookie consent and careful handling of form data.

How much does a website platform cost per month?

Builder plans start at roughly $10 to $29 per month billed yearly, while open source platforms are free but need hosting and maintenance. Apps, extra languages and sales tax or VAT add to the total.
