When someone in Dubai searches "dentist near me", "AC repair JLT" or "florist Business Bay", the first thing they usually see is a map with three businesses under it. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, the free tool that used to be called Google My Business.
For many small businesses in the UAE, this profile brings in more calls and WhatsApp messages than the website itself. This guide walks you through setting it up properly in 2026, step by step, including the parts that trip up Dubai businesses most often: free zone addresses, verification and suspensions.
Before you start: are you eligible?
Google Business Profile is for businesses that meet customers in person. That can mean customers come to you (a clinic, salon, shop, restaurant, showroom) or you go to them (cleaning, maintenance, moving, mobile car wash, interior fit-out). Purely online businesses with no face-to-face contact are not eligible.
Have these ready before you begin:
- Your business name exactly as it appears on your trade licence and signage
- A real address where you meet customers, or the areas you serve if you travel to them
- A UAE phone number you answer yourself
- Your website, or at least a landing page
- Your opening hours, a short description and a set of real photos
Step 1: Create your profile
Sign in with a Google account you control long term. Ideally use a business account, not a personal Gmail that belongs to one employee. Then go to Google Business Profile and choose to add your business.
Search for your business name first. If a listing already exists (Google sometimes creates them from public data), claim it rather than creating a duplicate. Duplicates confuse Google and split your reviews.
Google will ask for your name, category, whether you have a location customers can visit, your service areas, phone number and website. Fill everything in accurately. You can add more detail later.
Step 2: Verify your business
Your profile will not appear publicly until it is verified. Google decides which methods to offer you, and you only see them after you submit the profile. In 2026 the methods you are most likely to see are:
| Method | How it works | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|
| Video recording | You record a continuous video on your phone at the business, showing the location, the business itself and proof you manage it | Review often takes around 5 business days |
| Live video call | A Google support agent asks you to show the premises on a live call | Depends on support hours for your region |
| Phone or SMS | A code is sent to the number on the listing | Usually immediate |
| A code or instructions are sent by email | Usually quick, but manual review can follow | |
| Postcard | A code arrives by post | Rare today; the code expires after 30 days |
Video is now the most common method. To pass it the first time, record at least 30 seconds (Google says one to two minutes works best) and show three things in one take:
- Where you are: your signage, the building name, the street or nearby landmarks.
- The business: your products, equipment or work area.
- That you run it: unlock the door, open the office, use a staff-only area or show your tools.
If you are a service-area business with no shopfront, show your branded vehicle, tools and a recognisable local landmark or street sign. In September 2026 some new profiles also started seeing an option to submit a photo of the storefront with the business name on a permanent sign. It appears to be a test, so do not count on it.
Google also told owners in March 2026 that it may contact the verified phone number by call, text or WhatsApp to confirm business details, so keep that number active and answer it.
Step 3: Choose the right categories
Your primary category is the single most important setting on the profile. In Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local SEO experts, it ranked first for appearing in the map results.
You get one primary category and up to nine additional ones. Pick the primary category that describes what you are, as specifically as possible. "Pediatric dentist" is better than "Dentist" if that is what you do. Then add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.
A practical trick: search for your main service in Dubai and look at which categories the top three map results use. Do not copy blindly, but it shows you what Google associates with that search.
Step 4: Address or service area? The free zone question
This is where many UAE businesses get into trouble. Google's rule is simple: show an address only if customers can visit it during your listed hours, with staff present.
| Your situation | What to do on the profile |
|---|---|
| Shop, clinic, salon or office where customers visit | Show your address. You can also add service areas if you deliver or travel. |
| You travel to customers and work from home or a private office | Hide the address and list up to 20 service areas, such as Dubai Marina, Jumeirah or Al Barsha. |
| Free zone licence with a flexi-desk or virtual office | Do not use that address as a visitable location. If you visit customers, set up as a service-area business. |
| Coworking space | Only show it if you have permanent signage, staff there during listed hours and customers meet you there. |
| Fully online, no in-person contact | Not eligible for a Business Profile. Focus on your website and SEO instead. |
Virtual offices and shared desks are one of the most common causes of suspension worldwide. A free zone licence is perfectly legal, but a flexi-desk address is not a place customers can visit, and Google treats it that way.
Keep service areas realistic. Listing all seven emirates when you only work in Dubai does not help, and very wide areas can look suspicious.
Step 5: Complete every field
- Business name: your real name only. "Al Noor Dental Clinic" is fine. "Al Noor Dental Clinic Best Dentist Dubai Cheap Whitening" will eventually get you suspended.
- Hours: accurate regular hours, plus special hours for Eid, National Day and Ramadan schedules.
- Description: a plain explanation of what you do, who you serve and which areas you cover. Write it for people, not for Google.
- Services and products: list them with short descriptions and prices where you can.
- Website link: point to the most relevant page. Adding a tracking tag such as ?utm_source=gbp&utm_medium=organic lets you see these visits separately in Google Analytics.
If your website is outdated or slow, fix that too: the profile sends people there. Our guide to choosing a website platform in Dubai can help.
Step 6: Add real photos
Photos help people decide before they call. Upload your logo, a cover photo, your storefront or building entrance (so people can find you), the interior, your team and your work.
- Use JPG or PNG files between 10 KB and 5 MB. Around 720 x 720 pixels or larger looks good.
- Use real photos, not stock images or heavy filters.
- Add new photos regularly, for example a recent project each month.
- Short videos are accepted too; keep them around 30 seconds.
Step 7: Get reviews and reply to them
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose you. Ask every happy customer, at the moment they are happiest: when the job is finished or the service delivered. Use the "Ask for reviews" link in your profile and send it by WhatsApp or email.
What you must not do:
- Offer discounts, gifts, prize draws or anything else in exchange for a review. Google treats this as fake engagement and in 2026 has been applying review restrictions and public warning banners to profiles that break the rule.
- Buy reviews or ask staff, friends and family to post them.
- Ask only happy customers while steering unhappy ones elsewhere.
Fake reviews are also a legal issue in the UAE. In October 2026 Dubai Police arrested a group accused of coordinating false reviews on a company's Google Maps page, and lawyers point to the UAE Cybercrimes Law for penalties.
Reply to every review, good or bad. Thank people by name and mention the service. For a negative review, stay calm, apologise where appropriate and offer to continue the conversation privately. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews.
Step 8: Publish posts
Posts are short updates that appear on your profile. There are three types: updates, offers (with dates and an optional code) and events. Posts no longer expire after a week, but recent activity still shows people you are open and active.
Aim for one or two posts a month: a new service, a seasonal offer, a finished project, a Ramadan schedule. Add a clear photo and a button such as "Call now" or "Learn more". Keep the first sentence strong, because only the beginning shows before "more".
Step 9: Turn on WhatsApp chat
Google closed its own chat feature in 2024 and now lets you add a WhatsApp or SMS link instead. For most UAE businesses, WhatsApp is the obvious choice.
- Open your profile and choose "Edit profile".
- Find the Chat field under contact details.
- Add your WhatsApp click-to-chat link in the format https://wa.me/9715XXXXXXXX (country code first, no plus sign, no leading zero, no spaces).
- Save. The chat option shows mainly on mobile.
If you get a lot of messages, a WhatsApp assistant can answer common questions outside office hours. See our guide to the WhatsApp Business API in the UAE or our AI chatbot service.
Common reasons profiles get suspended
A suspension removes your profile from Maps, sometimes overnight. These are the usual causes:
- Using a virtual office, flexi-desk or PO box as a visitable address
- Showing an address when you are a service-area business
- Keywords or area names added to the business name
- Several listings for the same business at one address
- Many edits at once, especially to name, address, phone, category or map pin
- A new phone number or website that does not match your other online listings
- Review incentives or fake reviews
- Ineligible business models, such as online-only services
If you are suspended, fix the problem first, then appeal through Google's official appeal flow. Prepare your trade licence, a utility bill or tenancy contract (Ejari) and photos of signage that match the profile exactly. Do not keep editing the profile while the appeal is under review.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile free in the UAE?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is free. You only pay if you choose to run Google Ads alongside it.
Can I use my free zone flexi-desk address on Google Maps?
Usually not as a visible address. Google only wants addresses that customers can visit with staff present during listed hours. If you visit customers, set up as a service-area business and hide the address.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Phone, SMS and email codes are usually quick. Video verification is typically reviewed within about five business days, but it can take longer.
Can I add WhatsApp to my Google Business Profile?
Yes. In Edit profile, find the Chat field and add your WhatsApp click-to-chat link in the format wa.me followed by your number with the 971 country code. The chat option shows mainly on mobile.
Can I offer a discount in exchange for a Google review?
No. Google does not allow any incentive for reviews and can restrict your profile or show a warning banner. You can still ask every customer for an honest review.
Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Common reasons are a virtual office address, keywords in the business name, showing an address when you are a service-area business, too many edits at once, or review incentives. Fix the issue, then appeal with documents such as your trade licence.
